Chapter 6

“Last person to see her alive! What about the homeless looking guy, what about him?” I banged on the stove with the spoon that I was using to stir the macaroni. Radley sat quietly at my kitchen table, listening to me rant with an amused expression on his face that made me want to hit the spoon on something again. “I mean seriously. Tuck? No way he would hurt a fly. In fact, I’ve never even seen him raise his voice. It’s ridiculous.”

“What’s ridiculous?” May Belle asked from the entryway.

I jumped, nearly spilling boiling pasta water all over myself. “Where did you come from?”

She held up a key. “I let myself in. She looked between me and Radley. “I wasn’t interrupting something, was I?”

“No.” I turned back to the macaroni, pretending the heat in my face was from the stovetop not from a fierce blush rising up at the thought of interruptions or activities that could be interrupted.

Radley chuckled. “The only thing you interrupted was Zadie Belle about to start plotting the take down of our new sheriff.”

“You can’t do that!” May Belle tossed her wallet on the table and walked to the refrigerator to grab a bottle of water. “He’s about to be one of the lumber mill’s best local customers. A big, log house with wide decks around the front and back. Cedar planks for the walls in the living room and bedrooms.” She sighed blissfully.

I turned off the stove and carried the pot of elbow noodles to the sink. “Really? I can’t believe he picked out a house plan so fast. He didn’t seem to know what he wanted earlier.”

“Oh. Well, actually, I designed it myself. At least, I’ve started the design description. Micah told me to iron out the details because he wasn’t sure and was too busy to get into it all right now.” May Belle smiled. “It’s going to be amazing!”

“I’m so happy you and Micah are planning a dream home but, in the meantime, he lost his mind and arrested Tuck!” I dumped the macaroni into the colander more forcefully than necessary.

“I’m sorry, what?!” May Belle shook her head. “That can’t be right.”

“It is,” I said at the same time Radley said, “Not exactly.”

May Belle sat at the table and crossed her arms. “Explain please.”

“He is holding Tuck for questioning but he isn’t under arrest,” Radley said.

I finished making up the macaroni and cheese then plunked the bowl on the table. “Yeah, but he said Tuck was the last person seen with Tasha before she was dead. Which isn’t technically true because you said the man with the limp was with them, too.”

“But nobody around town has seen the man with the limp,” Radley pointed out. “He’s also missing, even if there’s nobody to report it.”

I glared.

He shrugged and held my gaze.

Then he winked and I found myself rolling my eyes and grinning.

It was a good thing he was so dang good looking because that man definitely got on my nerves. And so what if he was right; that wasn’t the point.
